EV maker Rivian’s Normal, Illinois factory has accumulated 16 serious violations in 21 months, according to a report by Bloomberg. These violations include workers suffering injuries such as amputated fingers, vomiting “Rivian blue” bile after painting without protection, cracked skulls, and severe back lacerations. Despite operating only one factory, Rivian has garnered more violations in the same timeframe than larger automakers like Honda, Volvo, and Ford. Additionally, there are claims of other unreported injuries, with one worker experiencing severe symptoms after being ordered to paint without a respirator. Rivian insists that safety is a top priority and has only received two serious citations from OSHA since January 2023. The company claims to provide all necessary safety equipment and allows workers to report concerns anonymously. Rivian has halted plans to build its R2 SUV in Georgia and is now focusing on production in Illinois. Despite ongoing efforts to hire more employees, the company faces scrutiny from OSHA and potential challenges in protecting its workers.
