Humane’s universally derided AI Pin is not exactly flying off of store shelves, according to internal sales documents published by The Verge. Returns seem to be currently outpacing new purchases, with only around 7,000 units remaining out in the wild out of the hoped-for 100,000 in the first year. Approximately 10,000 units have been sold, 3,000 returned, and over 1,000 pre-orders canceled. The gadget costs $700, leading many to return it after realizing it does not offer any useful function. Critics have called it the worst product ever reviewed, with a potential fire hazard adding to its unfavorable reputation. Humane is exploring possible acquisition options, with HP and investors showing interest, as reported by The New York Times and The Information. Despite software updates and efforts to improve user experience, questions remain about the device’s value compared to smartphones and other AI gadgets like Rabbit, raising concerns about the hefty price tag. The company is in a struggle to salvage its reputation amid mounting challenges and criticisms, with unidentified financial inaccuracies disputed and carrier restrictions hindering refurbishment opportunities.
