After their trial period ends, Spotify users in the European Union can now see the cost of its plans within the iOS app, as the company has opted into Apple’s “entitlement” for music streaming services. This decision came after the European Commission fined Apple €1.8 billion ($1.95 billion) for restricting alternative music streaming apps on the App Store. Initially rejecting Spotify’s update request to add pricing information, Apple has now approved the changes, allowing users to view pricing and promotional offers within the Spotify app. However, external payment options are not provided, as Apple still takes a cut of developers’ sales even if customers pay through third-party providers. Spotify criticized Apple for illegal and predatory taxes, urging the European Commission to enforce its ruling to benefit consumers with lower cost payment options and improved app experiences.
