The ongoing legal battle between Apple and medical technology company Masimo continues, with Apple winning their latest encounter as a federal jury ruled in favor of Apple’s design patents infringement claim against Masimo’s previous smartwatch models, awarding Apple $250 in damages. Despite the small monetary award, Apple sought an injunction on the sales of Masimo’s current smartwatch models, which the jury determined did not violate Apple’s intellectual property. Masimo also sees the jury’s decision as a win, expressing gratitude for the verdict that favored them on most issues, related to a “discontinued module and charger.” This legal dispute originated in Masimo accusing Apple of infringing on their blood-oxygen monitoring patents in 2021, leading to a countersuit from Apple. In 2023, the court sided with Masimo, prompting Apple to pause sales of certain smartwatch models due to a US import ban. Apple was later able to resume sales in the country by removing the disputed technology from the affected units.
