Disney+ account sharing crackdown starts today in the US

Disney has announced a new rule to combat password sharing among streaming subscribers, implementing plans outlined in a previous earnings call last month. A recent blog post from Disney explains the Paid Sharing feature on Disney+, which allows account holders to add an Extra Member for an additional $7 on Disney+ Basic or $10 on Disney+ Premium, expanding access to one person outside their household. Paid Sharing is now available in the US, Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. As Disney plans to raise prices to $10 a month for Basic and $16 a month for Premium, the Extra Member option remains a more affordable choice than a separate plan. However, there are limitations, with only one Extra Member allowed per account and this feature not applicable to Disney Bundle or partner-billed subscribers. The post indicates these restrictions are in place “at this time,” leaving uncertainty about potential changes in the future.
