Big tech firms have been incorporating AI tools into their software offerings, making it easier to manipulate images and video with generative AI. In response, a second wave of launching companion policies has emerged to better inform people when this technology has been applied to content. Google has now joined this trend by introducing new labeling for AI-modified visual content in Google Photos. Previously, Google was only tagging AI-modified images with metadata, but now a clear statement will accompany edited photos. This statement, displayed under “AI Info” on the image details screen, will credit the specific AI tool used to modify the image and specify whether generative AI was used or if it is a composite of multiple photos without generative AI. The updated language will start appearing in Google Photos next week, following the release of tools like Magic Editor and the integration of AI into its video editor.
