Google strikes a deal with a nuclear startup to power its AI data centers

Google announced a partnership with Kairos Power to build seven small nuclear reactors in the US, aiming to add 500 megawatts of nuclear power from small modular reactors by the end of the decade. This deal marks the first-ever corporate purchase of nuclear power from SMRs, which are more cost-effective due to their factory-built components. Kairos will seek approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission for their plans, with a demonstration reactor already in progress. Google’s move to nuclear energy for its AI drive follows similar deals in the tech industry, such as Microsoft’s agreement with Constellation Energy and Amazon’s purchase of a nuclear-powered data center. With the goal of accelerating reactor deployments and reducing costs, Google’s senior director for energy and climate, Michael Terrell, highlighted the benefits of this new approach in scaling advanced technologies.
