The second-generation AirPods Pro have incorporated hearing health features for some time, but these features are now expanding in iOS 18 with the addition of features like Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, and Hearing Protection, all soon to be available on the earbuds. Apple’s approach to hearing health covers awareness, assistance, and prevention, starting with a clinically validated hearing test that can be taken independently. Through the AirPods Pro settings on your iPhone, you can access the Hearing Health section to perform a thorough hearing test using the earbuds and phone in a quiet environment. The test uses active noise cancellation and real-world data to provide accurate results, recommending adjustments in the Media Assist settings based on your hearing loss levels. The results are stored in the Health app, allowing for tracking over time, with options to retake the test and access educational material. The Hearing Aid feature is tailored for mild to moderate hearing loss and offers customization options for amplification, balance, and tone. Both Hearing Aid and Hearing Test are set to be available this fall pending FDA approval as part of the iOS 18 update.
