With the high prices of fully specced iPhones and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold phones, Huawei has released a new flagship device that may require some serious financial planning to afford. The Huawei Mate XT, which the company claims is the first triple-fold phone on the market, will debut in China starting at 19,999 yuan (approximately $2,800). It took Huawei five years to develop the Mate XT, making breakthroughs in screen and hinge technology. The device features an accordion-style fold with one hinge bending outward and the other inward, offering a 6.4-inch exterior display. Despite the high price, the Mate XT has already received 3.7 million preorders in China. With a 10.2-inch 3K display when unfolded and various generative AI features, such as voice input and a chatbot, the Mate XT aims to steal some of Apple’s thunder. The rollout plans for the Mate XT outside of China are still unclear, and it is unlikely to officially come to the US due to restrictions in place against the company.
