Microsoft is discontinuing production of its HoloLens 2 headset as reported by UploadVR, with no plans for a follow-up device and advising customers to purchase the headset before stock runs out. Originally targeted towards enterprise consumers, the HoloLens 2 never made it to the mass market. This move is not surprising considering Microsoft abandoned plans for a HoloLens 3 headset in 2022. Despite this setback, VR and AR technologies are not doomed, with Apple’s Vision Pro still relatively new and Meta and Snap recently unveiling new glasses hardware. However, these alternative devices are much smaller and lighter than the HoloLens. Keep an eye out for further updates from Microsoft.
