NVIDIA’s AI team reportedly scraped YouTube, Netflix videos without permission

NVIDIA has come under fire for scraping copyrighted content to train artificial intelligence models, following a troubling industry pattern of tech companies racing to establish dominance in the AI gold rush. The company reportedly asked workers to download videos from YouTube, Netflix, and other sources to develop commercial AI projects for products like its Omniverse 3D world generator, self-driving car systems, and digital human efforts. NVIDIA defended its practices, claiming compliance with copyright law and equating the use of data to learning and expressing ideas. However, YouTube has raised concerns about the violation of its terms and CEO Neal Mohan explicitly stating that training AI models on YouTube videos is against the rules. NVIDIA employees who raised ethical and legal concerns about the practice were reportedly told it had already been approved at the highest levels of the company, echoing Facebook’s old motto of “move fast and break things.” In addition to YouTube and Netflix videos, NVIDIA allegedly trained on various datasets without regard for academic-only terms, using tactics like rotating IP addresses to evade detection. Overall, NVIDIA’s questionable practices raise significant ethical and legal implications regarding the use of copyrighted content for AI training.
