Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against TikTok, alleging that the social media company violated the state’s new child privacy law known as the SCOPE Act. This lawsuit marks the first test of the Act, which requires social media platforms to verify the ages of younger users and provide parental control features. Paxton claims that TikTok’s existing parental control features are inadequate, as they do not allow parents or guardians to control the sharing, disclosing, and selling of minors’ personal information. The company disputes these allegations, stating that they offer robust safeguards for teens and parents. This legal action adds to TikTok’s ongoing legal battles in the United States, including a potential ban of the app and a separate Justice Department lawsuit related to child privacy.
