Losing things is something I hate, but something I seem to be good at. Bluetooth trackers have been a game-changer for me, helping me locate my keys and wallet when I’m running late and can’t find them. These tiny gadgets attach to keys, fit into wallets, or simply hang out in bags, silently communicating with my phone through a companion app. They can easily be tapped to reveal their location, and they can even be located by a vast network of other smartphones if lost in the wild. Different trackers have different features and compatibilities, so I tested out various options, including those that work with Google’s Find My Device network, to help others pick the best Bluetooth tracker for their phone. These trackers are small discs or cards that communicate wirelessly with your smartphone, offering features like separation alerts and last known location detection. Depending on which tracker you choose, they may work solely with Apple or Android devices, so compatibility is key. The ability of tracker networks to find tagged items using crowd-sourced data is impressive, with Apple’s Find My network being the largest, followed closely by Google’s Find My Device network and Tile’s vast finding grid. In testing, AirTags were the quickest and most accurate in locating lost items, followed closely by Tile and Samsung’s SmartTags. While Chipolo’s classic trackers didn’t have a large network, their performance in everyday use cases impressed me the most. Separation alerts, which notify you when you’ve left a tagged item behind, are a key feature of Bluetooth trackers, offering peace of mind for forgetful folks like me. Each tracker handles these alerts differently, so it’s worth considering which works best for your needs. The connectivity, volume, and design of the tracker are also important factors to consider when choosing the best one for your needs. AirTags, for example, lack a key finder function and have a quieter volume, while Chipolo’s trackers are the loudest. Design-wise, trackers like Tile, Pebblebee, and Chipolo offer options that are easily attachable to different items. Battery life is also a consideration, with some trackers having replaceable batteries and others requiring a full unit replacement. One important consideration when using Bluetooth trackers is the risk of misuse, such as stalking. Companies like Apple, Google, and Tile have taken steps to address this issue, including introducing features like Anti-Theft Mode on Tile trackers. Despite these risks, Bluetooth trackers are a valuable tool for those prone to losing items and can make a significant difference in daily life.
