X has reportedly come back online for many people in Brazil after more than two weeks of being blocked in the country. This change is not due to a reversal of the Brazilian government’s stance on the Elon Musk-owned platform, but rather because X has started using Cloudflare’s DNS service to avoid the government’s restrictions for now. The block on X was initially ordered by Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes at the end of August following a feud with Musk over X’s refusal to block certain accounts, which also impacted Musk’s Starlink. According to The New York Times, X is gradually returning online in Brazil, although the service remains somewhat inconsistent. The move to Cloudflare has temporarily enabled this comeback, but Brazilian ISPs are likely working on complying with the court order, with potential new enforcement methods if they fail. Authorities have already imposed steep fines on users attempting to bypass the ban using VPNs.
