California has become the latest state to introduce mobile driver’s licenses, with both Apple Wallet and Google Wallet supporting California driver’s licenses and state IDs. Governor Gavin Newsom’s office announced this new feature, stating that while residents still need to carry a physical copy of their identification, the mobile option will streamline age verification during travel and at certain businesses. The addition of licenses to these tech companies’ wallet apps is part of California’s Department of Motor Vehicles’ larger program, with over 500,000 residents already utilizing the mobile Drivers License (mDL) pilot. Other states like Arizona, Maryland, and Ohio have also adopted support for mobile identification, highlighting the ongoing evolution of identification systems as Real ID laws are set to take effect in 2025.
