The Perseid meteor shower, a reliable annual event during the summer months, reaches its peak tonight, according to NASA. Late Sunday night into the pre-dawn hours of Monday is the ideal time to witness the Perseids, with clear, dark skies being the best viewing conditions. No special equipment is needed to enjoy the colorful streaks of light created as debris from comet Swift-Tuttle interacts with Earth’s atmosphere. During its peak, as many as 100 meteors per hour may be visible, some of which may include fireballs for an extra spectacular show. So find a good spot, ideally after the moon sets, and prepare to witness the natural fireworks in the sky.
