Dystopian shooters reminiscent of Doom are plentiful, but when the creators of the recent Doom games are the ones behind a new game, it’s worth paying attention. A new game called Defect from the studio Emptyvessel was recently unveiled, presenting multiplayer Doom-style gameplay with a touch of Dredd. Set in a city controlled by a malevolent AI and plagued by violence as factions vie for power, the trailer showcases impressive Unreal Engine 5 graphics and introduces some pre-production gameplay elements, including a weapon with a screen highlighting enemies, even those behind walls. Defect promises varied objectives and endings for each match, appealing to a strategic side of gameplay. The team behind Emptyvessel includes veterans from AAA titles like Doom, Call of Duty, Uncharted, Tomb Raider, and The Last of Us, with notable members such as Mick Gordon, the composer of the Doom soundtrack. Despite public disputes with id Software after Doom Eternal, Gordon’s involvement in Defect has excited fans with the prospect of his musical contributions.
