The Federal Communications Commission has proposed new rules governing the use of AI-generated phone calls and texts, aiming to create a clear definition for such calls and texts, as well as to protect consumers by requiring companies to disclose when AI is being used. The FCC stated that this transparency will help consumers avoid potential fraud and scams. Additionally, the agency is aiming to ensure that legitimate uses of AI to assist people with disabilities in communication are protected. This proposal is part of the FCC’s efforts to regulate AI in robocalls and robotexts, following previous actions such as placing a ban on AI-generated voices in robocalls and urging telecom companies to crack down on the practice. Notably, there have been instances of AI robocalls attempting to spread misinformation to voters ahead of the November election.
