Ford’s electric three-row SUV is dead

Ford has scrapped plans to build an electric three-row SUV as part of a shift in their EV strategy, pivoting instead to focus on using hybrid technology in their upcoming models following a delay in the release of these vehicles. They have delayed the rollout of a next-gen electric truck to incorporate new features and take advantage of lower-cost battery tech, while also planning to introduce a medium-sized electric pickup in 2027. Ford is aiming to produce profitable models with their EV platform to compete with Chinese electric vehicle makers, despite the US imposing a 100 percent tariff on imported EVs from China. They are also set to start production of a new electric commercial van in Ohio in 2026, with a Tennessee factory manufacturing cells for the van and the next-gen electric pickup in the following year. This strategic change comes as Ford works to minimize losses on current electric models and ensure future EVs are profitable, with the EV division projected to lose $5 billion this year.
