Game Informer, a giant name in the gaming press, announced today that it has been shut down by parent company GameStop after 33 years in business. The entire website and archives have been removed, redirecting to a final statement thanking readers for their support. The closure was confirmed through social media posts by staff members who were caught off guard by the sudden news. The magazine, which launched in 1991 under the FuncoLand brand, reached a peak readership of 6 million before being acquired by GameStop in 2000. Game Informer’s content director, Kyle Hilliard, expressed frustration over the timing of the layoffs, as they were in the midst of creating a new issue. The announcement marks the end of an era for a publication that has long been a staple in the gaming community.
