When Google introduced Gemini side panels for Gmail and its other Workspace apps, it also announced that its generative AI chatbot would eventually offer contextual smart replies for email services. The company has now officially released this feature. Smart replies have been available in Gmail since 2017, providing users with quick responses, although they may lack personalization. The new Gemini-generated smart replies consider the full content of the email thread, offering more detailed and personable responses. Users will see multiple response options at the bottom of their screen, allowing them to preview before selecting the best one. Access to this feature is available for Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, or Education Premium add-on users, as well as Google One AI Premium subscribers. It may take up to 15 days to see Gemini’s smart replies in the app, so users should ensure they have enabled “Smart features and personalization” in their Gmail app settings.
