An Intelsat communication satellite built by Boeing has exploded and broken up in geostationary orbit, confirmed by Intelsat in a press release declaring the satellite a total loss. The US Space Force is tracking around 20 associated pieces with no immediate threats observed to other satellites so far. The cause of the explosion is unknown, adding to recent setbacks for Boeing including a failed crew test flight of Starliner, problems with the 737 Max, and delays to the 777x. Intelsat is working to move customers to other satellites or third party spacecraft and is conducting a comprehensive analysis of the cause with a Failure Review Board. The satellite was uninsured, and the fragments from the explosion could potentially pose a risk to other satellites. Intelsat 33e was one of six “EpicNG” satellites built by Boeing and faced various issues during its service life including a propulsion issue that reduced its lifespan.ære.
