In late June and early July, Iranian hackers sent unsolicited emails to people associated with President Biden’s camp containing stolen materials from former President Trump’s campaign, as confirmed by a joint statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. The feds noted that there’s no evidence of recipients replying to the sender and that the stolen materials were also sent to news publications like The Washington Post and Politico. The FBI was investigating the Iranian hackers’ attempt to infiltrate both Trump’s and Biden’s campaigns using spear-phishing techniques in August, with no evidence of success within the Democratic Party. However, they did manage to take control of Roger Stone’s email account to send more spear-phishing links. The stolen materials, including research on Republican vice-presidential nominee JD Vance and internal poll results, were sent from an AOL account under the name “Robert.” Trump’s camp is demanding that the Harris camp disclose the materials received and urging news outlets not to publish the stolen information. Microsoft has also found evidence of Russian troll farms running disinformation campaigns targeting Harris and her running mate Tim Walz in an attempt to discredit them, with inauthentic videos spreading false accusations.
