Mubi has acquired the US and global SVOD rights to “Grand Theft Hamlet,” a documentary where two unemployed actors endeavor to stage William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” within the virtual world of “Grand Theft Auto Online” amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The film, scheduled for release in early 2025, features over 300 hours of “GTA” footage and includes in-game auditions recruiting other players to fill out the cast. Awarded the documentary feature jury prize at its premiere at SXSW, “Grand Theft Hamlet” currently holds a 95 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This creative take on Shakespeare joins a trend of gaming-inspired adaptations of the Danish prince, including Google’s VR version in 2019, his appearance in MMORPG Mabinogi in 2011, and a quirky video game in 2010.
