Banishing my phone from the bedroom has been the best thing I’ve done for my sleep, so it may seem ironic to add a smartphone app to this list. However, Headspace has the opposite effect on sleep that social media does, offering an extensive library of meditations and exercises to help relax and fall asleep, similar to the Hatch Restore. Short wind-down segments and longer “Sleepcasts” with calming stories are available, along with sleep music and soundscapes lasting up to 500 minutes. The app also includes a “Nighttime SOS” page with guided exercises for getting back to sleep after waking up from bad dreams or stress. A yearly subscription costs $70 or $13 monthly, providing access to daytime meditations and stress management sessions that can also benefit sleep. Before using Headspace in the bedroom, ensure your phone’s sleep focus or bedtime mode is activated to avoid distractions that may disrupt the app’s benefits.
