The US Department of Transportation has laid out a nationwide road safety plan in a PDF that will lead to cars communicating with each other, hoping to reduce the number of roadway fatalities to zero. V2X technology enables vehicles to stay in touch with each other, pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users, sharing information about position, speed, and road conditions. The plan includes a US-wide rollout by 2036, aiming to fully deploy V2X technology across the National Highway System and major metro areas. Stakeholders such as the Federal Communications Commission, automaker suppliers, and app developers will play a part in achieving this goal, despite concerns about cybersecurity and costs. V2X technology has the potential to prevent thousands of deaths and serious injuries, with officials praising the plan as a significant step towards nationwide adoption.
