Meta has been gradually fulfilling its promise to make Threads compatible with the fediverse over the past six months. Users can now share their posts to Mastodon and other Activity Pub-enabled services, with the app starting to show replies originating from these platforms earlier in the summer. Recently, Threads has enhanced visibility by allowing users who opt into fediverse sharing to see replies on other users’ posts, creating a new section dedicated to “fediverse replies.” This development will make more fediverse content visible within Threads, offering users the opportunity to browse through replies from Mastodon and other sites. However, support for other Activity Pub content is still limited, and users must opt into fediverse sharing to view replies from other apps. While the feature is in beta and does not support replies to these replies yet, Meta engineer Peter Cottle has mentioned plans to address this limitation in the future. This update may encourage more users to embrace the fediverse, a crucial step for the wider adoption of decentralized social media platforms in the mainstream.
