Waymo driverless cars in San Francisco have been coming back online at night and honking at each other, with videos circulating showing dozens of vehicles sitting in a parking lot and honking away, much to the annoyance of human neighbors in need of sleep. This strange behavior is not a sign of the AI apocalypse or robots learning to flirt, but rather an error in the security software that requires a honk when a car gets too close. Waymo has since updated the software to address the issue and ensure that their electric vehicles keep the noise down in the future. Despite this incident, Waymo continues to expand its taxi service in San Francisco, Phoenix, and a small section of Los Angeles, with the company boasting that their robotaxis complete 50,000 paid trips per week.
