Most people are now aware that passkeys are a more secure way to protect online credentials than passwords, with major tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft supporting the protocol. Adoption of passkeys has significantly increased in the past year, with Dashlane reporting a 400% increase in usage. Amazon also stated that over 175 million customers are using passkeys to protect their accounts. However, there is still a lack of awareness that online identity can be protected without relying on passwords, and transferring passkeys between platforms is not as seamless as it should be. The FIDO Alliance, responsible for the technology, is working on draft specifications for the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP) and Credential Exchange Format (CXF) to facilitate the secure transfer of passkeys and passwords between apps and platforms. With industry giants collaborating on this effort, there is a good chance that the future will allow for easier transitions between password managers, ensuring that the tool you use won’t hinder platform changes. The FIDO Alliance emphasized the importance of allowing users to choose their preferred credential management platform securely and without hassle. While the CXP and CXF standards are not yet finalized, the FIDO Alliance plans to gather feedback before implementing the technology.
