AMD has started rolling out updates to mitigate the “Sinkclose” security flaw affecting some of their chips, as reported by IOActive and Wired. The vulnerability impacts most AMD processors from 2006 onwards, but not all chips will receive patches, including the Ryzen 1000, 2000, and 3000 series and Threadripper 1000 and 2000. While AMD’s security team is working on updating some systems, older products outside the support window will not be patched. Newer models and embedded processors are expected to receive or have already received the necessary updates. The Sinkclose flaw poses a greater risk to governments and large entities, as exploiting it requires deep system access and could allow hackers to run code in the chips’ protected System Management Mode, potentially leading to severe consequences if exploited.
