I unexpectedly found myself crying while playing “Summit,” a $6 mountain climbing platformer for Playdate that draws comparisons to Celeste. Despite frustration and moments of storming away only to return minutes later, after an hour and 34 minutes and 432 deaths, I was in tears. This marks the second Playdate game to evoke such emotion in me. In Summit, you navigate as a cloaked climber with ice axes, facing challenging obstacles with precision and frustration. The game uses the d-pad, buttons, and crank, requiring coordination to progress through levels. The music sets a reflective mood, leading to an emotional turn at the end that left me misty-eyed. Summit tests determination with its extreme platforming, making it a must-play for fans of Celeste.
